Hydrosol is the highly aromatic liquid that remains after steam distilling or hydro-distilling botanical material, such as lavender flowers, during an essential oil production. Steam is passed through plant material and the condensate is collected. Hydrosols have similar benefits to essential oils, however since they are diluted, they are safe to apply straight to the skin.
Ok, that’s great. But what are Floral Waters then? They are simply water mixed with fragrance or essential oils and preservatives.
How to spot the difference? First of all, check the ingredients list. Hydrosols ( pure) would not have any essential oils or fragrance. Some would use preservatives, however since hydrosol is pure steam that is captured ( which is microbe free) and bottled immediately, preservatives can be omitted. That is, of course, if the production is of good standards.
Saying that, what you may also find in the ingredient list of a hydrosol, are natural compounds found in said product; such as Linalool in Lavender Hydrosol. Linalool occurs in lavender hydrosol naturally and must be listed, as it is an allergen.
Studies reported that hydrosols have a range of therapeutic benefits of essential oils that they are by-products of. The benefits are gentler, since hydrosols are diluted, however they are still very much present. Unlike essential oils you can apply hydrosols safely to the skin.
Hydrosols make wonderful skin toners. They nourish, moisturise and tone the skin. You can use them to condition your skin before you apply your favourite face oil, and anytime during the day to moisturise and energise your skin. What is really special about hydrosols is that they have extraordinary aromatic properties. They smell like heaven and promote immediate relaxation.
At The Witchery CPH we believe that the mind & body are connected, and hydrosols are one of our favourite products. We really recommend using them when you need some space, to relax and to centred yourself, and, of course, when your skin needs a little love and a pick me up.
